Shri Shaligram is believed to have thousands of years old. Its history can be found in various of purana like Vishnu puran, Shiva puran, Bhagvad puran. Shaligram is not found in different river or different Country. But it is only found in Nepal. Even though if we get chance to collect shaligram in other country out of Nepal. But they are not religious important comparing to Nepal shaligram shila. Shaligram is also found in Damodar Kund which origin is same Gandaki River.
